Fix Scratchy Sounding Amplifier Knobs and Pots
🔧 The Easy Fix Most People Don't Know About
Scratchy, crackly knobs are one of the most common problems with older guitar amps and pedals — and one of the easiest to fix. That scraping, static-like noise when you turn the volume or tone knob is caused by oxidation and dirt buildup inside the potentiometer. It sounds bad, but in most cases you don't need to take anything apart to fix it.
The solution is DeoxIT D5 — a contact cleaner and rejuvenator that dissolves oxidation and restores conductivity inside the pot. Landon demonstrates the full process on a Fender Deluxe 85 in under 5 minutes. It works on virtually any amp, pedal, or piece of guitar gear with potentiometers.
🛠️ What You Need
Just one product: DeoxIT D5 by Caig Laboratories. It comes in a spray can with a thin straw nozzle for targeted application. Available at most guitar retailers and online.
📋 Step-by-Step: How to Fix Scratchy Pots
Turn Off and Unplug the Amp
Switch off the amp and unplug it from the wall. For tube amps, wait at least 30 minutes before working near the electronics. Safety first.
Remove the Knob
Most amp knobs pull straight off — grip firmly and pull directly away from the panel. Some have a small set screw on the side requiring a small flathead screwdriver. Removing the knob exposes the shaft and gives DeoxIT better access to the pot.
Apply DeoxIT D5
Attach the thin straw nozzle to the can. Spray a short burst directly into the gap around the pot shaft where it enters the panel. You don't need much — a 1-2 second burst is enough. The cleaner will work its way inside.
Work the Pot
Rotate the pot shaft back and forth vigorously 20-30 times. This works the DeoxIT through the resistive track inside the pot and dislodges the oxidation causing the scratchiness.
Test and Repeat if Needed
Replace the knob, plug in, and test. For amps that have been sitting for years, you may need to repeat the process 2-3 times. The scratchiness typically reduces significantly after the first application and disappears completely after a second.
💡 Pro Tips from the Comments
Spray from the Back
If you can access the back of the pot (by opening the amp), spraying directly into the pot's rear opening is more effective than spraying from the front. The cleaner gets fully inside rather than running down the shaft.
Lay the Amp on its Back
When spraying from the front, lay the amp on its back so the DeoxIT flows down into the pot by gravity rather than running out. Gives you better penetration without disassembly.
Works on Pedals Too
The same technique works on scratchy pots in guitar pedals, mixers, keyboards, and any other gear with potentiometers. DeoxIT is a universal fix for oxidation-related crackling.
Don't Overdo It
More isn't better with DeoxIT. A short burst is enough — excess cleaner can drip onto PCB components nearby. One or two short applications is all you need.
