Vox amPlug2 Classic Rock Review: The Perfect Travel Guitar Amp?

By Landon Bailey  |  July 28, 2017

The Vox amPlug2 Classic Rock is a headphone guitar amplifier that plugs directly into your guitar's output jack. There is no cable, no speaker, and no desk space required. You plug in your headphones, dial in one of three gain modes, and play. Landon reviews the Classic Rock version on vacation, which is exactly the use case these devices are built for — situations where you want to play your guitar but a real amp is not practical.

What the amPlug2 Is

The Vox amPlug2 is the second generation of the amPlug series, which Vox has been making since the mid-2000s. The concept is straightforward: a self-contained guitar amplifier small enough to fit in your pocket, powered by two AAA batteries, that delivers amp-modelled tones through headphones without any additional hardware. The plug-in-to-guitar design means you can be playing within seconds of picking up the guitar.

The Classic Rock version is one of several amPlug2 models, each voiced for a different style. Classic Rock is aimed at players who want British-influenced break-up tones — think Marshall-adjacent crunch and overdrive rather than clean Fender tones or high-gain modern sounds. The three gain modes cover clean, crunch, and lead, which between them cover the majority of classic rock playing styles.

The Three Gain Modes

Clean mode on the Classic Rock amPlug2 is not entirely clean — it has a slight edge of break-up that keeps it in the Classic Rock character even at the lowest gain setting. If you want pristine clean tones, the AC30 version of the amPlug2 is a better choice. For rhythm playing and edge-of-breakup tones, the Clean mode here works well. Crunch mode delivers the core of the Classic Rock voicing: a warm, compressed, British-flavoured overdrive that covers rhythm parts across most classic rock styles from the 1960s through the 1980s. Lead mode adds additional gain and compression, pushing the voicing further toward sustained lead tones.

The Effects

The amPlug2 Classic Rock includes three built-in effects: chorus, delay, and reverb, each selectable independently. For a device at this price point the inclusion of any effects is a bonus rather than a core feature, and the quality reflects that. The reverb is useful for adding space and air to clean tones. The delay adds a slapback quality that works well for rockabilly-style playing. The chorus is functional but not a feature most players will use regularly on a Classic Rock voiced amp. Having them available without pedals is a practical convenience for headphone practice.

The Mini Rig Setup

Using it as a speaker output Landon demonstrates running the amPlug2's headphone output into a Blackstar Fly 3 mini amp, which functions as a small speaker cabinet for the amp's signal. This turns the amPlug2 into a tiny desktop rig capable of producing room-filling sound at low volumes. It is not the intended use case but it works, and it gives the amPlug2 a second practical application beyond headphone practice.

Who This Is For

The amPlug2 Classic Rock is for three types of players. First, the traveller who wants to practise on the road without disturbing hotel neighbours. Second, the apartment player who cannot use a real amp at any reasonable hour and needs a silent practice solution. Third, the player who wants to practise with backing tracks through headphones without running a full rig. For all three situations the amPlug2 is the simplest, most portable, and most affordable solution available.

It is worth noting that the amPlug2 is not a substitute for a real amp in any meaningful sense. The tone is compressed and limited compared to what a tube amp delivers, and the absence of a speaker means you are always hearing processed sound rather than genuine amplification. For serious tone work it is the wrong tool. For practice, travel, and late-night playing it is the right one.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Pocketable size makes it genuinely travel-practical
  • No cables or desk space required
  • 17-hour battery life is excellent
  • Three gain modes cover most Classic Rock territory
  • Built-in effects at this price is a bonus
  • Aux input allows playing along to music
  • Articulating plug accommodates different guitar jack positions
Cons
  • Not a replacement for a real amp — tone is limited
  • Clean mode is not truly clean
  • Headphone comfort matters — it sits at the guitar jack while you play
  • No volume control beyond the guitar's own volume knob

Verdict

The Vox amPlug2 Classic Rock does exactly what it promises. If you need to practise silently, travel with a guitar, or play along to music through headphones without setting up a full rig, it is the simplest and most practical solution available at this price. The tone is good for what it is. The battery life is excellent. If Classic Rock voicing is what you want, this is the right amPlug2 to buy.
