Fender Player Telecaster Review: Butterscotch Blonde

By Landon Bailey  |  April 25, 2019

The Fender Player Telecaster in Butterscotch Blonde is one of the most iconic colour and guitar combinations available at this price point. Made in Fender's Ensenada, Mexico factory, the Player Series replaced the long-running Standard Series in 2018 and brought updated pickups, a revised neck profile, and a cleaner overall spec across the board. Landon covers the full setup process, specs, and tone samples in this review of the Butterscotch Blonde version.

Why Butterscotch Blonde?

Butterscotch Blonde is the colour most people picture when they think of a Telecaster. It is the closest available production colour to the original 1950s blonde finish that Leo Fender used on the first Telecasters, and it pairs naturally with a maple neck and black pickguard for a look that has barely changed in 70 years. On the Player Series it looks particularly sharp because the gloss polyester finish deepens the warm golden tone of the colour.

The Telecaster shape itself is one of the most recognisable in music. Slab body, single cutaway, two single-coil pickups, and a no-nonsense 3-saddle bridge. It is a guitar that was designed to work, and it has spent the last seven decades proving that point across nearly every genre of music.

Delivery and Setup

Landon covers the unboxing and initial setup at 1:41. This is a useful section if you are buying your first Fender and want to know what to expect straight out of the box in terms of setup, action, and playability. The Player Series typically arrives in good shape from the factory but benefits from a quick check of the truss rod and string height before playing.

Tone Samples

What you will hear Tone samples start at 5:10 covering clean and driven settings from both the bridge and neck pickups. The Player Series Alnico 5 single-coil pickups are the biggest upgrade over the old Standard Series. They produce a clear, bright Telecaster tone with the bridge delivering the sharp, cutting snap the Tele is famous for, and the neck offering a warmer, rounder character that works well for clean playing and blues.

The Player Series Telecaster vs the Standard

If you owned or played a Fender Standard Telecaster before 2018, the Player Series is the direct replacement. The most noticeable change is the pickups. The Player Series Alnico 5 pickups are voiced differently from the old ceramic-wound Standard pickups and produce a cleaner, more articulate tone particularly in the bridge position. The Modern C neck profile is also slightly updated from the Standard's profile and feels more comfortable for most players.

The 6-saddle bridge is worth noting. Where some Telecasters use a vintage 3-saddle bridge, the Player Series ships with individual steel block saddles for each string, which makes intonation adjustment much more precise. For players who care about getting the guitar perfectly in tune up and down the neck, this is a meaningful practical improvement.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Player Series Alnico 5 pickups are a genuine step up from the old Standard
  • Butterscotch Blonde with maple neck is a timeless combination
  • 6-saddle bridge makes intonation easy to set precisely
  • Alder body delivers the classic balanced Telecaster tone
  • Modern C neck is comfortable for long sessions
  • Excellent build quality from the Ensenada factory
Cons
  • Polyester finish is thick compared to nitrocellulose options
  • Stock tuners are functional but not premium
  • No shielding in the pickup cavities

Verdict

The Fender Player Telecaster in Butterscotch Blonde is exactly what it should be: a well-built, great-sounding Telecaster at a price that makes sense. The Player Series pickups are a real improvement over what came before, the alder body delivers the classic Tele tone, and the Butterscotch Blonde finish is as good-looking in person as it is in photos. If you want a Telecaster that is genuinely gig-worthy without paying American-made prices, the Player is the answer.
